CD 220 Phonetics

Description:
The primary purpose of this course is to learn to transcribe spoken language. You will study the sounds of American English and learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet to transcribe both normal and disordered speech production. |

General Education Outcomes:
The student will:
- Recall basic concepts and terms necessary for understanding phonetics.
- Learn and demonstrate use of the International Phonetic Alphabet when phonetically transcribing spoken language.
- Use both systematic phonemic and narrow transcription schemes in order to accurately transcribe spoken English.
- Describe and explain the differences between a national "standard" of speech, and variations due to dialects.
- Explain characteristics of English sounds.
- Identify the oral structures and explain their function in the production of consonant and vowel sounds.
- Relate the functions of the oral and nasal resonating cavities in speech production.
- Be able to auditorily discriminate the English vowel sounds and identify their specific characteristics.
- Classify the distinctive features for the comparison of phonemes.
- Use diacritic markers appropriately when transcribing speech production.
- Discuss the relationship of phonetics to other areas of speech and language.

Course Requirements and Grading Scale:
- Read the text, complete all workbook exercises with accompanying tapes.
- Complete review exercises and study questions as assigned.
- Hand in all assignments by due dates.
- Take all quizzes and exams that cover both academic and applied components of class.
- Adhere to the academic honesty policy associated with your college.
- Notify instructor at the beginning of term if you are in need of special accommodations to meet course requirements

Assessment Measures:
Student achievement of the above outcomes will be determined by a variety of measures including: textbook exercises, participation in online discussions and study assignments, online exercises, quizzes and exams. |
Homework (Workload)
There will be 8 units to cover during the course. Each unit will take one to two weeks to complete. Material must be completed by due dates as indicated in the syllabus and in the course calendar. The course is a 16 week course.
Homework Exercises: 50-100 pts. (depending on the number of assignments)
Class Discussions/Other Assignments: 50 pts. (depending on number of assignments) |

Quiz/Exam 1 25 pts.

All exams will be done online with a policy of one attempt/submission per exam, and they must be completed in a given time frame. The time and format for each quiz/exam will be explained in the course material and for each quiz/exam. At this point I am not planning to have a proctor. |
Technology Required: The course will require a computer with internet access that allows for unlimited time online. A word processing program that is compatible with WebCT (i.e. Microsoft Word). The course online web site will allow them to download any necessary free software. They will need a good audio system with their computer as they will take some quizzes via audio dictation. They will also need to download a special font in order to transcribe the International Phonetic Alphabet. They will need to learn to use the keyboard adjusted for this font as different keys represent different symbols/sounds and markings. They could get the font downloaded at any time and familiarize themselves with it to expediate the learning of the course material. The website for a free download of the PEPPER font is: www.waisman.wisc.edu/phonology/. The text for the course needs to be ordered with the three audio CD's listed. If they do not have the CD's, they will be unable to complete the course. The bookstore was provided the information necessary to order the correct material for the course.
