What is Massage Therapy?
Graduates in Massage Therapy are skilled in the use of massage and other related treatments. Massage Therapists are rapidly becoming a very important part of the professional health-care team. Massage Therapists primarily treat the human body to enhance relaxation, promote healing, relieve stress, and enhance blood flow.

Career Opportunities:
Massage Therapists are qualified to work in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, schools, rehabilitation centers, outpatient clinics as well as in their own private clinics.

Essential Functions of a
Massage
Therapist:
Physical:
This includes but is not limited
to the ability to perform the
following
activities:

Continuously (5
1/2 to 8 hours/day) stand in
place, twist, stoop (bend at
waist), pinch or grasp with hands,
reach with arms
overhead.

Occasionally
(1/2 to 2 1/2 hours/day) sit,
walk, write
Cognitive:
This may include, but is not limited
to (depending on work setting), the
ability to:

Deal with a
variety of patient/client ages,
behaviors, cognitive abilities,
cultures, and ethnic
backgrounds.

Learn and apply
new information on methods of
treatment, equipment, pathologies,
etc. on an ongoing
basis.

Read and write
therapy reports, clinical notes,
communications to and from other
professional team
members.
-
Interact
positively with many professionals
including members of a
multidisciplinary
team.

Generalize
learning from one situation to
another, as
appropriate.

Provide clients
with clear instructions that are
adapted to their cognitive levels
and communication
needs.

Process
information accurately,
thoroughly, and
quickly.

Salary
Massage Therapists
have the opportunity to make between
$20-$40 per hour.
|
|
|
|
Program
Accreditation
This program is authorized to operate
by the North Dakota State Board of
Higher Education. Most states, at this
time, do not require this
accreditation.

About the Distance Massage Therapy
Program
Williston State College, in
collaboration with Bismarck State
College and Minot State University,
has brought its Massage Therapy
Program to Bismarck and Minot. Two
options are available, a two-year
Associate in Applied Science Degree in
Massage Therapy and a two-semester
Certificate program. All general
education and pre-massage therapy
courses may be completed at Bismarck
State College, Minot State University,
or other approved colleges. All course
work for the program may be completed
at either location. The massage
therapy courses are being taught using
the Interactive Video Network (IVN)
and onsite training in Bismarck and
Minot.

Program
Costs
In addition to the usual tuition and
fees as established by the State Board
of Higher Education, students will be
required to purchase their own massage
table at a cost of approximately
$500.00. Students will also incur
other expenses related to additional
fees, textbooks, and minor
supplies.

Admissions
Criteria
Admission into the Massage Therapy
program is competitive. Along with
acceptance to WSC, students must
submit a massage therapy application.
Acceptance into the program will be
based on: grades in prerequisites
courses, number of courses completed,
and seats available in the massage
therapy classes. Students must
complete all required courses with the
minimum grade of "C". Students
pursuing a Certificate only, must
complete BIOL 220 (Anatomy &
Physiology I) and BIOL 221 (Anatomy
& Physiology II) prior to entering
the program.
Grades received in Anatomy/Physiology,
Kinesiology, or Pathology, which are
greater than 5 years old, will not be
recognized as meeting program
graduation requirements. Students will
be given the option of passing a
competence exam or repeating the
course. Massage therapy theory or
technique courses completed at
institutions that are not part of the
North Dakota University System cannot
be used to complete program
requirements.
