CD 221 Language Development

Description:
The study of those events and processes which combine in relatively predictable and observable ways and are evidenced in the acquisition of language. |
Prerequisites:
Acceptance into the Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program. |
Learning Outcomes (Course Objectives):
The student will be able to:
- Describe the components/properties of communication, speech, and language.
- Discuss, compare, and contrast theories/models of language development.
- Discuss the neurological, cognitive, and social development of children and how they relate to language development.
- Identify and describe the basic anatomical and physiological aspects that relate to language development.
- Identify and describe basic language-learning principles and the adult-child relationship in learning language.
- Identify and describe the language characteristics of children from a variety of age groups (newborns, infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children).
- Discuss the multicultural aspects of language development.
- Elicit, transcribe, analyze, and interpret a language sample.

Homework (Workload):
There will be two projects to be completed during the course. There will also be assigned chat sessions which will be scheduled throughout the semester. |
Exams:
There will be weekly quizzes which will cover information from the readings and lecture notes. There will also be a midterm and a final exam. |
