CD 221 Language Development

Description:
The study of those events and processes which combine in relatively predictable and observable ways and are evidenced in the acquisition of language.
Prerequisites:   
Acceptance into the Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program.

Learning Outcomes (Course Objectives):
The student will be able to:

  1. Describe the components/properties of communication, speech, and language.
  2. Discuss, compare, and contrast theories/models of language development.
  3. Discuss the neurological, cognitive, and social development of children and how they relate to language development.
  4. Identify and describe the basic anatomical and physiological aspects that relate to language development.
  5. Identify and describe basic language-learning principles and the adult-child relationship in learning language.
  6. Identify and describe the language characteristics of children from a variety of age groups (newborns, infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children).
  7. Discuss the multicultural aspects of language development.
  8. Elicit, transcribe, analyze, and interpret a language sample.
Homework (Workload):
There will be two projects to be completed during the course. There will also be assigned chat sessions which will be scheduled throughout the semester.
Exams:
There will be weekly quizzes which will cover information from the readings and lecture notes. There will also be a midterm and a final exam.
