AH 270 Applied Surgical Transcription

Description:
Transcription of surgical dictation; e.g., chart notes, operative reports, consultations, etc.

Prerequisites: 
AH 220

Learning Outcomes (Course Objectives):
Course Goals:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to work independently of others.
  2. Demonstrate the proper use of reference materials.
  3. Transcribe letters, consultations, chart notes, history and physical reports, discharge summaries, operative reports, diagnostic studies, radiology reports, and pathology reports dictated by various physicians.
  4. Edit the transcript to correct obvious grammatical and punctuation errors.
  5. Identify obvious medical inconsistencies.
  6. Produce a final neat, error-free transcript.
  7. Increase transcription speed and productivity throughout the course.

Learning Outcomes:
This course demonstrates the student's general education goals by:

  1. Improving listening skills;
  2. Improving computer skills;
  3. Increasing the awareness for lifelong learning;
  4. Improving the ability to think out various medical situations and put them in proper order;
  5. Learning to take responsibility for one's own work habits and actions, and their consequences

Homework (Workload):
Students will spend a minimum of three hours per day doing transcription assignments. Students must complete this course with 83% or higher accuracy.
