How to disable pop-ups(pop-up blocker) and get the correct version of Java, maintain the correct version of Java, and how to view/download Word, Power Point, and PDF files

Steps to remove pop up blocking and to get appropriate version of Java for WebCT 6.0

Disabling Popups in your browser:

If you have Internet Explorer 7, on the right hand side of the browser is a button called Tools. Click this and there will be a selection called Pop Up Blocker. Go to this and then to Pop Up Blocker Settings and then disable the pop ups.

If you have Fire Fox, on the top of your screen is a tab called Tools. Click this then click on Options at the bottom. A new window will open, choose the Content tab at the top. You will then see 4 check boxes, the first one should be unchecked and the other three should be checked.

To get the correct version of Java:

Click the start button, point to settings and click on control panel. When in control panel, double click add or remove programs. Scroll down to the 'J' section and anything that says Java or J2SE select and Remove.

Once all of the Java or J2SE's are removed, navigate back to the WSC WebCT 6.0 login page. Click the Check Browser button and scroll down to where it says Java Check. Beneath this Java Check will be a blue link that says something like "If you want more information please click here" click that link. It will bring you to a page that has a blue link on it that says something like "Java - Get It Now", click that.

This will bring you to a new page that should have two buttons at the top; one should say accept and one should say decline. Click the button next to accept. Then scroll down the page until you start seeing different versions of Java to download. The version that should be downloaded is the Windows Offline Installation Multi-Language version. It is the very first file on the list. Also, double check this by looking at the right side of the screen at the file name. The file name should have 1_5_0_07. Go ahead and click the link to download that version.

When it is done downloading, choose to run the installer and select a typical installation.

When it is done installing, navigate back to the WSC WebCT 6.0 login screen. Click the Check Browser button, just to see if everything checks out. If everything is in order, you are free to login without any problems.

How to prevent Java from updating:

Click the start button, point to settings then click on control panel. When in control panel, double click on the Java icon. Once the Java window appears, click the Update tab and deselect the Check for Updates Automatically checkbox. Be sure to click OK after you are done.

If you can not download or view Word, Powerpoint or PDF files:

If you click on a file to view or download it, but see a yellow bar come across the top of your screen saying that the action was prevented, click anywhere inside the yellow bar and select download this file. Note that upon clicking this selection, it will bring you back to your homepage where you can select your classes; this is normal. Now go back into your class and you will be able to view or download any file your instructor has available to you.

This will enable you to view or download any file while you are logged in, however once you log out of your WebCT account you will have to do this process all over again.
