Description:
Expands on English 110, offering advanced practice in writing from resources and applying rhetorical strategies including persuasion, advanced analyses (causal and problem solving), and critical or speculative essays.

Prerequisite:
ENGL 110

Learning Outcomes (Course Objectives):
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have shown the ability to do the following:

  1. Plan, write, and revise multi-paragraph compositions.
  2. Demonstrate competence in generating and exploring ideas.
  3. Write for a variety of purposes.
  4. Develop a thesis by exploring a variety of organizational strategies.
  5. Show critical/logical thinking and reading skills such as evaluation, synthesis, and criticism.
  6. Use accurate grammar, mechanics, and spelling.
  7. Choose diction and usage appropriate to specific audiences.
  8. Will show ability to research in a limited environment.

Exams:
Final exam is an essay-type exam which tests citation ability and critical reading and writing skills. It is graded using same acceptability requirements as the essays. The exam will be e-mailed to the student upon completion of the student-chosen number of essays. The student has 12 hours to complete the exam. (No exams will be accepted after the first day of exam week. No exceptions.)
