What is Speech Language Pathology Assistant?
Speech Language Pathology Assistants (SLPA) work under the direct control of a supervising Speech Language Pathologist.
 
What can I do with this degree?
With this degree, SLPA's can provide the following services:
  • Speech language screenings without interpretation, following specified screening protocols developed by the supervising language pathologist.
  • Perform documented tasks developed by the supervising speech language pathologist.
  • Document student's progress toward meeting objectives and report this information to the supervising speech language pathologist.
  • Prepare materials, perform scheduling and maintain space or equipment.

Career Opportunities
Labor market information projections show an increase in the demand for speech language pathologists ranging from 14% - 64%. It is predicted employment opportunities for SLPA's will grow since administrative rule changes occurred in North Dakota allowing employment of SLPA's in school-based settings. Wages for a SLPA are expected to range between $10-$18/hour.
 
Online Program
This program is offered entirely online. General education courses and electives may be taken on-campus. The CD prefix courses will be offered only online at this time.
 
Curriculum - Associate in Applied Science
The Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program follows requirements for certification as a SLPA by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction. The degree requires 62 credits.

 * CD 241 (Practicum) will require a minimum of 100 hours of supervised observation in a
  speech language setting. Accepted locations will be determined by the instructor.
Program Accreditation
The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) is not currently accrediting or certifying programs. The SLPA program is utilizing the ASHA guidelines to be in position to seek accreditation if ASHA resumes accrediting programs
 
Program Admission Requirements
Students are admitted to the program each spring semester. The number of students admitted to the program is limited. Admittance is based on the following criteria:
    • Submission of a completed application packet and:
      1. Application Letter (typed)
      2. Two letters of reference (employers, teachers preferred)
    • Completed application to the home campus
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Completion or in the process of completing the following courses with a minimum GPA of 2.5
      1. ENGL 110:  College Composition I
      2. CSCI 101:  Introduction to Computers
      3. Science (BIOL 111:  Concepts of Biology with Lab or
        BIOL 115: Human Structure and Function with Lab)
      4. CD 110:  Survey of Communication Disorders (Beginning Fall 2006)
    • Overall GPA of 2.25
