INTRODUCTION
The Dakota Nursing Program is a 1 + 1, Practical Nurse to Associate Degree Nurse Program. The Program is offered through a consortium of 4 colleges in North Dakota. The member colleges are: Bismarck State College, Lake Region State College, Minot State University – Bottineau, and Williston State College.
The program has one overall nursing director. There are nursing coordinators located at each of the four college campuses. The organizational chart is located on the next page of this introduction.
MISSION
The mission of the associate degree and practical nursing programs is dedicated to providing quality undergraduate education, which prepares graduates for nursing practice in multiply structured, culturally diverse, health care settings for clients across the lifespan. This mission is consistent with the missions of the consortium colleges (Williston State College, Lake Region State College, Bismarck State College, and Minot State College – Bottineau). The curriculum is based on liberal arts and biological sciences, and integrates nursing content and clinical experiences. Nursing faculty strive to provide a learning environment which promotes active participation, a spirit of inquiry, self-development, and sound, knowledge-based decision making. Integral to goal attainment of the nursing programs is the continuing development of alliances in the community, which strengthen the colleges’ mission to provide services that will improve quality of life for individuals of the communities they serve.
PROGRAM PURPOSE
The Practical Nursing Curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge, abilities and skills to provide basic nursing care to individuals across the life span. Students will participate in the application of safe nursing care in a dependent manner under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice nurse, or a licensed practitioner to meet the basic health needs of individuals. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN), which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Employment opportunities include acute practice, long term care practice, and community-based practice.
