What is Medical Transcription?

Medical transcription is a growing field that can provide steady employment while working at home or at a medical facility. The goal of this program is to prepare you for entry level employment as a Medical Transcriptions. The courses will provide you with the basic knowledge, understanding, and skills required to transcribe healthcare dictation and prepare patient care documents with accuracy, clarity, consistency, and timelines, applying the principles of professional and ethical conduct.

What Does a Medical Transcriptionist Do?

Medical transcriptionists transcribe physician-dictated material that becomes a permanent part of the patient's medical record. The medical transcriptionists is an important part of the allied health team. Medical transcriptionists must be trained in a variety of areas such as medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, laboratory procedures; as well as grammar, keyboarding, and transcribing. Important skills required in medical transcription include listening, hand-eye coordination, hand-ear coordination, keyboarding, and patience.

Delivery Method

The Associate in Applied Science degree requires 62 credits. All coursework can be completed at home. The programs are delivered by a combination of online and correspondence courses and follow the Williston State College academic semester schedule (ex, fall semester, spring semester, summer term).

Upon completion of the courses and requirements, you will be awarded Associate in Applied Science Degree. Graduates of the program have the opportunity to work at home. Students completing the degree are qualified to sit for the certification test from the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists, making them Certified Medical Transcriptionists.

Program Requirements:

  • 2.00 (C) grade point average
  • 16 credits completed in residence
  • 62 total credits
  • Complete a keyboarding test at a rate of 45 corrected wpm/5 min.
